Meyer Lemon Drop Martini
I am thrilled to report that we finally thawed out a bit over the weekend from the deep freeze in Atlanta. The sun was out and the temps were warm (comparatively speaking), so much of the snow and ice melted away! Yay!
Us folks down here in the South just aren’t used to stuff like that. We may sound like whiners we are wusses we are complaining, but when a major city doesn’t own but a few snow plows or have rock salt and it snows 5 inches, followed by ice and 18 degrees, you know what happens!
Anyway, one thing that brightened up my time in captivity snowy days was my delivery of Meyer Lemons fresh from sunny Southern California!
You might remember that my friend Kim, from Rustic Garden Bistro, was generous enough to ship some of those little buggars all over the United States to friends who begged asked for some!
I have preserved most of them to use in some very special dishes that will be coming soon. I am letting them mingle in the fridge awhile to make sure the Preserved Lemons will be perfect to use in cooking. They need to sit in the briney mixture to infuse the flavors.
As you might remember, I did have a few lemons leftover and was trying to decide what to do with them. Well, I thought I might make something sweet, but guess what…a boozy drink won over the dessert item! Are you really that surprised? 😉
This cocktail is a bit tart (hence, the name “lemon”), so if you like sweeter drinks, you might want to add a bit more simple syrup. Alternatively, I think a sugared rim on the glass would be nice so that you could have a bit of sugary goodness in every sip!
I personally like mine a bit tart, so I was good with this recipe as is. There’s nothing like a little sunshine in a drink to brighten up your Wintry days!
Meyer Lemon Drop Martini
Adapted from A Mingling of Tastes (recipe was originally from Martha Stewart Living)
Serves 2
Ingredients:
2 ounces simple syrup made with the zest of one Meyer Lemon
Juice of two Meyer Lemons
3 ounces good Vodka (I use Ketel One)
Sugar rimmed glasses, optional
Directions:
To make the simple syrup, mix equal parts of sugar (one ounce) and water (one ounce) and the lemon zest in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves.
Remove immediately from the heat and strain the mixture through a fine sieve. (* I did this so the mixture would not become too bitter.) Set aside.
In a cocktail shaker, combine ice, the simple syrup mixture, Meyer Lemon juice and the vodka. Shake for a few seconds and strain into chilled or sugar rimmed glasses.
This sounds perfect! No extra flavors to distract from the lovely Meyer lemon juice.
I agree. I like it just as it is. I prefer tart cocktails to sweet ones.
You know, I’m not a huge “lemon drop” fan… but gosh darn a fresh one made with meyer lemons. Well, that just sounds delicious!
Hi Brian,
The name is deceiving. I thought it would be really sweet, but it’s not at all. It has a totally different flavor from the Meyer Lemons.
Gwen
Oh yes!!! I’ve been waiting for this one! I love lemons and I love martinis, so this is like a collision in heaven LOL
Love the moody shots!
Hi Denise,
Moody shots come from several of these babies! 😉 They are mighty good!
Gwen
I always get lemon martini’s, this is just fab and heats you up quick!
Yes, indeed! These will warm the cockles of your heart! 🙂
No need for the sugared rim in my book. This sounds, and looks, perfect just as is. Many thanks! I’m glad you guys are finally thawing. I try constantly to help my family and friends up north understand that we don’t have massive structures dedicated to rock salt storage all over the city or a fleet of salt throwers and snow removals to rival the school buses that sat idle in parking lots for a week. That being said, some planning beforehand would have been appropriate.
I so agree with you on the snow stuff. When we knew it was coming, some planning to plow might have been nice. Once it was frozen, it wasn’t going anywhere. Maybe they learned this time?
Doesn’t sound too bad…being snowed/iced in and sipping one of these, but glad your weather is warming up a bit. I won’t rub in the fact that we’ve been in the high 70s, low 80s 😉
Hi Denise,
Yes, we know you folks out there in Southern California have almost perfect weather year round…just rub it in…;) Yes, sipping a few of these makes up for some of the miserable weather here…a little sunshine in a cocktail!
Gwen
OMG yum! Great post! Can’t wait to see you this week
Hi Alison,
Looking forward to seeing you, too!
Gwen
I so need one of these right now! It’s been a very long Monday!
Me, too!
Meyer lemon martini, so elegant and pretty! Love Meyer lemons the fragrance and taste are so sublime!
I agree, Shulie. I love the smell of Meyer Lemons, especially when baking with them!
This looks great! We have a Meyer Lemon tree in our backyard and they are my favorite thing to use in cooking or drinking. And I happen to love lemon drops as well. So this is a keeper for me. Can’t wait to try it!
Hope to meet you at BlogHerFood in Atlanta in May!
Mmmmmmm. Sip. Sip. So pretty my mouth is watering. Beautiful photos, Gwen! I need to plant a lemon tree. Now!
Yes, Carolyn, you should plant a tree! I wish we had the proper weather here to do it, but not after the deep freeze!
O.K. I live right next door and if you need a food or drink taster…you know who to call
Love you,
Jane
I love the lemon drop martinis, but with the Meyer lemons, Oh My! Do you think that
Kim, from Rustic Garden Bistro has any Meyers lemons left. I would like some shipped to me. Thanks for sharing!

Yep. I sent you an email. 🙂
Probably bad when you are bookmarking a cocktail recipe at 7:43am…can’t wait ’til Friday night when we shake a few of these up! I love a citrus based martini~clean flavor and not too sweet. Cheers!
that is a great glass of sunshine – would love to sit, whine and sip with you and with that one in hand….
Wow, I could really go for one of those right now. Is it after 12???
That cocktail looks extremely refreshing. I don’t like them too sweet, so it would be perfect without the simple syrup. I’m very excited about whatever you’ll be cooking up with the preserved lemons. Your teasing is very effective!
Definitely prefer tart over sweet, which is why I prefer making my own Lemon Drops – too many places use that awful sweet & sour mix. But, the best Lemon Drops are concocted when sweeter Meyer Lemons are available! Glad to hear you’re thawing out a bit down South 🙂
It is so hard for us southerners to deal with the cold! I completely understand 🙂 I was so ready for the sun to come out after a week of cold dreariness. Bring on the heat! On a more luscious note…I love what you did with your lemons. I need to make a cocktail with the last few Meyers I have. Thank you for sharing your tasty martini with me. I hope you had a great day…may tomorrow be even better!
Another winner. 🙂
Cheers!

Perfect timing Gewn – just when those lovely meyers are beginning to make an appearance. Your class cocktails rock!

Sounds delicious 🙂
Tart is good! Beautiful photos, so refreshing. Happy you thawed a bit too.
Love the idea of a Meyer Lemon Drop martini – will have to try when I see the new batch of lemons come into Whole Foods 🙂
