Highlands, North Carolina – The Lick Log Mill Store
Happy Memorial Day Weekend to everyone! I hope your holiday has been wonderful so far.
I know that Memorial Day has special significance to many people. If you live in the United States, the purpose of the holiday is to honor the men and women that have served in the military and fought for our country. Obviously, many of our citizens have lost loved ones over the years, and therefore, it is a particularly special and perhaps, difficult holiday.
Many of us also associate Memorial Day with the beginning of Summer, barbecues, and gathering with family and friends. For Roger and I it has meant the beginning of the summer season in Highlands, North Carolina for the last nine years and getting together with great friends and sharing fun times.
We have been visiting this mountainous area since I first moved to Georgia. Highlands is approximately two and a half hours from Atlanta, it is at 4200 feet elevation (reason why I did not make my Daring Bakers Challenge – the baking is nearly impossible here) and it sits on a plateau that is designated as one of the few temperate (not tropical) rain forests in the lower forty-eight states.
You can always count on temperatures to be at least 10 to 15 degrees cooler here in the summer, so it is a welcome change from the sweltering heat in Hotlanta come July and August.
There are also a few great farmer’s markets that I love to frequent. I cannot always get the really unusual stuff (like I do in Atlanta), but the trade-off can be worth it for some of the fresh strawberries (as in my Strawberry Tart with a Shortbread Crust and Strawberry Freezer Jam), South Carolina peaches (Peach Cheesecake Pots with a Biscotti Crumble) and other great produce that will be coming our way soon.
Well, this weekend, we have decided to say good-bye to Highlands. We have been thinking about leaving here for some time, but have finally made the decision to do something different with our lives, so this weekend now has some bittersweet meaning for us.
In honor of the great times we have had here over the last ten years, I have decided to share some of the best the mountains has to offer while we still are able to spend some time here. So, I will be doing some hopefully fun and different posts this summer. Of course, in this real estate market, it might take us a year or more to sell, so this occasional odd post for our site could go on for awhile!
You may or may not know that Roger has been through colon cancer twice and recently had heart surgery (right before Camp Blogaway). He recently was declared cancer free and is doing really well. Highlands has been a very peaceful and restful place to come to during the past seven years of recovering from health issues, but now that he is feeling great, we are going to shake things up a bit! We hope to travel more, get back to business pursuits and enjoy everything that life has to offer.
Lick Log Mill Store
For almost ten years we have passed this odd little building on the side of the road coming up the mountain to Highlands. As you can see on the photo at the top of the post, the original building dates back to 1851. We knew it was a store of some sort, and assumed it was probably antiques. We were curious, but never bothered to stop. We know many people that have done the same. Well, one Roger decided to take some photos of the neat old car outside the building, so rather than just snapping away, we decided to go inside and let the owner know what we were doing.
I love the Gregory baskets, what a cool place! I hope Mr. Bunkycook’s health keeps improving, thanks for sharing such an interesting post with great photos.
Thank you for your comment, Patty. It is such a neat store and we are so glad to have finally stopped in! They had some baskets that were backpacks with leather straps. They were just beautiful!
Happy Memorial Day Weekend to you! That’s wonderful you two will be traveling more. Are you moving away from Atlanta or just giving up your mountain retreat? The Log Mill Store looks like it has some cool finds and blogging props! We’re in the midst of cooking for Taste of Provence tonight, for the first Concert, and I found the most beautiful platter for my Salad Nicoise plating….wait till you see it 😉 Oh, and Mr. “Newf in My Soup” is working on his Tarte Tropézienne…
Hi Denise,
We are planning on staying in Atlanta, but you never know what we might do! We did see some really pretty areas in your part of the country, so maybe someday…The Taste of Provence sounds like so much fun! I am sure the platter is gorgeous that and everything you both prepare will be lovely. I can’t wait to see the post!
Gwen

thanks for such a wonderful post and such great images!!
Cheers
Dennis
Hi Chef,
I know the store would be an incredible hit online, but they live a quiet life and want to keep it that way. I spoke with her son the other day and he doesn’t get on the internet either. Maybe they all have the right idea! 😉
Gwen
That store’s not all that far from us. We may have to make a day-trip of it sometime. It looks wonderful. Thanks for letting us know about it.
Hi there,
It is truly a neat store to visit. Where are you in NC? Be sure to tell Karen that you read about her store on my blog if you make it to Highlands!
We’re in Winston Salem; the Piedmont.
finds such as this one are always such a treat, don’t you wish you had stopped years ago? The IOU thing is a hoot. Bless hubby and so glad things have turned around. Enjoyed reading this one, kinda like a backwood road trip…
Thanks for the comment, Drick. I thought the IOU was pretty amazing, too. We asked her if we could mention that and she of course said it was. I guess she has been fortunate enough to have trustworthy customers over the years, so good for her!
oh I absolutely love stores that are like this would love to visit…just went to NC not too long ago…will have to check it out next time, how far from Charolette?
Love NC and am really happy to hear the Mr. Bunkycooks is doing well – such good news! The store looks like a wonderful shop – isn’t it a hoot that folks do exist who aren’t ON the internet? Have a wonderful rest of the holiday weekend – looking forward to reading more adventures during your last summer on the mountain!
These wonderful places are often right under our noses. It great you stopped because that is ofen what life is all about. GREG
I’m so happy to hear about your husband being declared cancer-free. What a relief that must be. I absolutely love the look (and name) of this little store. I’ll bet there are so many treasures to find inside.
Isn’t it wonderful when you stumble across places like this. So many unique and rare finds. I love stopping in little towns and visiting the local merchants. I love the car!
I’ve spent some time on the Georgia side of this area and it is beautiful. I’ll have to come here and now know where to stop. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this informative post with us. I always learn something when I read your site. That is why it is on my must read list.
Great photography you have quite a talent there.
Cheers!
What a charming post, and store, and story you tell! I love all your photos of what must be the MOST fun place to browse. Thank you, and I wish continued good health to Mr. Bunkycooks!
Happy Memorial Day to you and Mr. Bunkycooks! Glad to hear that he is cancer free. Stores like this one are always such fun to visit. They do have some pretty neat stuff. I have no experience with Gregory baskets but I do like my Peterboro baskets. They are all so well made. Thanks for sharing!
These photos are amazing, I LOVE that old rusty car. What a find!
What a fantastic place…I am sure your new adventure will bring further delights:)
Dear Gwen – What a wonderful store reminiscent of a lost idyllic time…..but what fun that its available to us right here , right now.

Hi Gwen: I luv this cute treasure of a store that you found and the images you took of it!
I read your post a couple of days ago and shared your exciting news with my hubby. I’m so happy for you and Mr Bunkycooks – that he has a clean bill of health and that you’re about to embark and start a new adventure together. How exciting for both of you and so many good things to look forward to. =) ~Cristina
We have been going to the Lick Log Mill Store since our first visit to Highlands about 10 years ago and are very happy to hear that Karen is still there and all’s well. We are coming back to NC in November for a week off and plan to travel to Highlands just for this store. One of my favorite purchases in the past were the hand-made wooden spoons — shaped for right or left-handed users. I buy a bunch and then keep some for me and give the rest out to friends and family. Thanks for writing about this!
Hi Susan,
Thank you for your comment. Karen is still up and running and she still carries those spoons that you mentioned! I am sure she will be happy to see you in November! 🙂
Gwen
This is my favorite store. Everytime I come to North Carolina, I must stop in. I love the store, but most of all I love the cabin and the surrounding grounds. It is so beautiful with the flowers and stream. I could spend my whole time just enjoying the peace and beauty of the store and surrounding grounds.
Thank you for this little piece of heaven,
Laurie Dosal 🙂
I love this place!!!
We passed the Lick Log Mill Store the first of November of this year (2013)
and it did not appear to be open for business and there was a For Sale
sign in front of the building. Does anyone know anything about this or what
Has happened to Karen and her husband? It was a sad sight. We always looked forward to visiting when we were in the area.
Hi Mary Sue,
The last time we were in Highlands we did see Karen and her husband outside the store. My guess is that they are tired of operating the business after so many years and I know he has had some health issues. I agree that they and the store will be sorely missed. It was a very unique shop and a great place to stop on your way in and out of Highlands.
Gwen
We were just in the area in October 2016, and the Lick Log is still for sale and the old truck has been gone for a few years.
Sad to see the truck gone. Always looked for it and a wagon full of flowers when we drove by.
The store was quaint and the owners always friendly. Nice place to stop by.
I did a watercolor of the old truck and is a popular pick on my Etsy.com shop.
I first went to the Lick Log Mill Store in 1983, and returned multiple times every year for 20+ years! Back then the store had what appeared to be the original wood floors. Some areas of the floor had so many missing boards, and the holes were so large, you could look straight through and see the dirt below!! Other areas in the floor were sagging, and other areas were so soft customers were advised to step over!! It was a hoot, and never stopped me – or any of my girlfriends – from going right in to see/purchase treasures from local artists!! I still have two very large baskets from the Lick Log Mill Store, that I likely purchased around 1984-85 – and many other treasures that I treasure!! Sorry to read about the owners selling the place, and failing health. Hopefully, the Lick Log Mill Store will be preserved and not lost to the weeds. Blessings, and sweet memories to everyone…………….
Is it still open
Love 💕
No. Sadly, it closed many years ago.
