The Sandpiper Hotel – St. James, Barbados
Nestled in a quiet neighborhood on the west coast of the island in the Saint James parish of Holetown, The Sandpiper is located directly on the beach. With just 48-rooms, the property offers comfortable island luxury. Winner of several prestigious awards, The Sandpiper was chosen by the 2014 Fodor’s 100 Hotel Awards in the “Beach Getaways” category, naming it as one of the top 100 hotels in the world. Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards named the resort one of the top ten hotels in the Caribbean and Atlantic in 2014 and they received a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor in 2014.
The entrance to the resort is secluded; hidden behind a wall of bushes and trees from the street, it is easy to drive past the property. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted at the open-air reception area. In fact, all of the resort’s public spaces are open. With the cooler breezes on this side of the island, the temperatures are moderate throughout the year, so the public spaces are open and inviting. The lush tropical gardens and trails winding through the resort lead us directly to the private white sandy beach. Listening to the surf crashing along the rocks, I knew the beach was not far away. I could even listen to the waves as they rolled onto the shoreline from our garden view room.
Centrally located on the property is The Restaurant, one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants on the island. Executive Chef Christophe Poupardin changes his menu frequently throughout the week, focusing on creative European and Asian inspired dishes with a Caribbean flair.
