Where to Eat and Stay in Kennebunkport, Maine

Where to stay

The Captain Lord Mansion

With the history of Kennebunkport rooted in the shipbuilding industry, it’s fitting that some of the largest and finest inns in town were originally built as elegant mansions for wealthy merchants and shipbuilders. The Captain Lord Mansion is the largest of those mansions and certainly one of the most stunning.

Built for Nathaniel Lord in 1814, this spectacular mansion with just 16 guest rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the Captain’s Garden House, retains much of its original charm and character from over 200 years ago, yet is updated with modern amenities. It’s the only Bed & Breakfast in Kennebunkport that has been awarded the AAA 4 Diamond Award for 35 consecutive years and is a member of the Select Registry. Owned by the same innkeepers, Bev Davis and Rick Litchfield for 38 years, this inn is truly a labor of love.

The rooms are all unique in design, yet each is elegant and impeccably appointed with beautiful antiques, four poster beds, wall coverings, paintings, a fireplace, and other decorative touches. Each bathroom, also unique to every room, has heated marble floors to take the chill off those New England mornings and jetted tubs for complete relaxation in the evenings. Some even have stained glass windows, just as you might find on an old sailing ship.

A hearty multi-course breakfast is served family style in the Country Kitchen and dining room each morning featuring fresh squeezed orange juice, organic yogurt, organically-farmed eggs, and local Maine syrup. The property also offers spa services, a large wine selection, and a beautiful living area with a fireplace where you can enjoy afternoon treats or a glass of wine and chat with other guests. Be sure to walk up to the widow’s walk, where legend has it the captain’s wife would stand wait for his ship overlooking the harbor. Today, rather than a view of the harbor, there are huge maple trees that shade the view from the mansion.

We spoke with several guests during our stay who have returned to the inn for many years. As a tribute to their frequent guests, the innkeepers have created a Memory Garden where bricks are personalized and engraved and placed along the walkway in the property’s garden after ten visits to the inn. There are literally hundreds of these bricks, which is a testament to the popularity and charm of the inn and the hospitality of its innkeepers.
