The sights and flavors of New York City

The city that never sleeps.  The Big Apple.  New York City.  If you have never been, or it has been a while since your last visit, then you need to put a visit to New York City on your Bucket List.

As you may know, we just returned from a long weekend in New York to attend the James Beard Foundation Awards.  While Bunkycooks did not win in the Best Individual Blog category, to be included in such an esteemed list of culinary professionals is truly an honor that stays with you the rest of your life.  I will share some highlights of the two JBF events I attended over the next few days.  Today, however, I thought you might enjoy some photos of New York City and some culinary experiences we enjoyed while in the city.

A little shopping in SoHo

Flatiron Building

It has been several years since our last visit to New York.  I am always impressed by the size of the city and the number of markets, stores and incredible restaurants that are at every turn.  There are inviting aromas of food and baked goods as you walk past restaurants, bakeries and street vendors.  And there are people.  Lots and lots of people.

I also forget how much you walk in the city and why you can eat and drink the whole time you are there and never gain an ounce.  A definite plus, if you ask me.  Getting in shape while enjoying fabulous food, wine and drinks.  It’s a win-win situation. 😉

Only in New York

One of the highlights from our weekend was a delightful lunch and interview that I will be sharing in a few weeks.  We were also invited to dine at Gotham Bar and Grill, a timeless classic in New York that is located just minutes from the Beard House.  Chef Alfred Portale has been at the helm of this stunning restaurant since its opening in 1984.  Combining fine dining with casual elegance, Gotham Bar and Grill breaks with tradition in white tablecloth dining, yet Chef Portale’s dishes of “modern American cuisine” are served beautifully with flawless service.

I still enjoy a good Cosmopolitan every now and then

Gotham Bar and Grill

The dishes we chose were outstanding.  The flavors and presentation were truly exceptional.  Focusing on the best seasonal ingredients, even something like Spring Pea Soup was elevated to a new level.  Combined with morel custard, carrot pearls, pickled ramps and fresh mint, the soup was silky smooth, sweet and luscious. The freshness and beauty of the peas burst through with each spoonful.  This evening is one we will not soon forget.  The next time we are in New York, we will most definitely return to Gotham Bar and Grill for dinner.

We did not take very many pictures while dining in New York.  It felt uncomfortable, sometimes it was quite dark and we did not want to disturb others during their meals, so unfortunately, we do not have many food photos to show you how gorgeous these dishes were.  You will just have to take my word for it and dine there next time you are in New York!
